Technology Trends
How the processing of data has changed over the past four decades.
In the 1970’s almost all data
processing and computing
was done on massive main
frame computers and only
displayed to the user via a
green screen.
In the 1980’s, the
introduction of a smaller
personal computer provided
the capacity for the client pc
to perform data processing
tasks.
The introduction of main
stream Internet connectivity
in the 1990’s returned the
trend to fast and powerful
super computers processing
vast amounts of data for
millions of Internet users. The
problem was the lag time
between user action and
system response, especially
as the load increases on
those super computers from
processing the thousands of simultaneous requests.
The power and cost of
current day home and office
pc’s means that the average
user can own a computer
capable of processing
phenomenal amounts of data.
Smart Client Technology
takes advantage of the client
processing power, as well as
reaping the benefits of central
data repositories, working in
both “web connected” and
“unconnected” environments.
